The Story

The Opportunity
This kitchen and bath came to us through a designer who was leading a remodel for the homeowner. The vision was already taking shape: warm, natural wood cabinetry that felt classic and tailored, carried through both rooms so the home would feel cohesive from space to space. Our role was to bring that vision to life in rift-sawn oak, with the level of detail and craftsmanship the design called for.

What We Discovered
Rift-sawn oak was the right choice for this home. Its straight, consistent grain gives it a calm, refined look that feels at home in a traditional setting without ever feeling heavy. But that consistency also raises the bar. With so much wood on display, every door, drawer, and panel needed to read as one family, with grain and color flowing evenly across the kitchen and into the bath. Working closely with the designer, we focused on the details that would make the cabinetry feel custom rather than assembled.

Finding Alignment
In the kitchen, the designer paired rift oak base cabinetry with painted upper cabinets in a soft, warm neutral, keeping the room light while letting the wood ground it. The oak returns up high in a band across the hood and in a tall run that houses a paneled refrigerator, tying the two tones together. The island is all oak, built with furniture-style corner posts and plenty of drawer storage. In the bath, the same rift oak carries through in a vanity designed to feel like a freestanding piece of furniture, connecting the two rooms through material and craftsmanship.

Bringing It to Life
Inset doors and drawers with a subtle recessed panel give the cabinetry a tailored, heirloom quality, and the straight rift grain keeps it clean and composed. Thoughtful details are built in throughout: an outlet and switch bank set neatly into a panel on the island, an integrated drawer microwave, a paneled refrigerator that disappears into the oak run, and toe-kick lighting that gives the cabinetry a soft glow at night. Up top, open cubbies above the painted uppers make a home for cookbooks and favorite pieces, while glass-front doors add a lighter touch near the windows. Black-and-nickel bar pulls add a crisp accent against both the oak and the paint.
In the bath, the vanity sits on legs with an open shelf below for towels, a stack of generous drawers to one side, and a small countertop cabinet that adds storage right where it's needed. Polished nickel pulls and knobs keep it bright and classic against the marble and white tile.

Living With It
The cabinetry is designed to make everyday life easier. The island's deep drawers keep cookware and essentials within reach, the paneled fridge and drawer microwave keep appliances from dominating the room, and the open cubbies put frequently used favorites on display. In the bath, the open shelf keeps towels handy, while the drawers and countertop cabinet keep daily items organized and counters clear.

Takeaways
Rift-sawn oak is a beautiful choice for anyone who wants the warmth of wood with a quieter, more refined grain. Pairing it with painted cabinetry can keep a kitchen feeling light and balanced, and carrying the same wood into other rooms creates a sense of continuity throughout the home. And when a designer brings a clear vision, the right cabinetry partner can help translate it into details that make the finished space feel truly custom.
